VOLUME 94 • NUMBER 12 • DECEMBER 2010 REGULAR FEATURES GEOLOGIC NOTE Structure and kinematics of an outcrop-scale fold-cored triangle zone ARTICLES Microfracturing in the Upper Triassic Sichuan Basin tight-gas sandstones: Tectonic, overpressure, and diagenetic origins Hydrocarbon occurrences in the western Anatolian (Aegean) grabens, Turkey: Is there a working petroleum system? Oil generation as the dominant overpressure mechanism in the Cenozoic Dongying depression, Bohai Bay Basin, China Xiaowen Guo, Sheng He, Keyu Liu, Guoqi Song, Xunjun Wang, ON COVER — An outcrop-scale triangle zone in Mississippian fine-grained siliclastic sediments of the Harz Mountains, Germany. In contrast to triangle zones that are commonly interpreted to be composed of vertically stacked duplex horses, this structure, although similarly bounded by upper and lower detachments, is cored by a number of tight, rootless folds. The structure formed during the Variscan Orogeny; transport direction was towards a light-green lichen, which preferentially colonizes tectonic breccia (especially bottom right). The hammer in the photo is 35 cm long. See article Tanner et al. on pg. 1799 of this issue of the Bulletin for more information. Photograph by Christian Brandes. ANNUAL REPORT Reports of the Officers, Advisory Council, and House Reports of the Foundation and Petroleum Technology INDEX ACKNOWLEDGMENTS— AAPG thanks the AAPG Foundation for financial support of this issue of the Bulletin Printed in the U.S.A. PREVIEWS Understanding triangle zones Analysis of the evolution of triangle zones (widespread structural elements that link fold-and-thrust belts with their foreland basins) can help to better understand the dynamics of these structures. The structural style of triangle zones can strongly influence reservoir properties. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1799 Fracture arrays in the Sichuan Basin Microfractures impact the distribution of natural gas and improve storage and permeability. They are especially well developed in the Upper Triassic Xujiahe Formation in the western Sichuan Basin, China. This paper looks at their distribution, characteristics, and origin. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1811 Deeper Neogene depocenters needed The rich source rock in western Anatolian graben basins is oil and gas generative at maturation, but the shallow burial is only locally overcome where additional heat input into the system exists through deep reaching faults, volcanism, or post volcanic hydrothermal circulation. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1827 The overpressure generation The oil generation overpressure mechanism can explain all the observed characteristics associated with overpressure in the Dongying Depression and appears to be the main cause for overpressure in these mudstones. Disequilibrium compaction is not the dominant mechanism. . . . . . . . . . . . .1859 2010 Annual Report The 2010 Annual Report includes reports from the president, treasurer, editor, Advisory Council, House of Delegates, Foundation, and AAPG divisions, sections, and committees. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1885 2010 Index The index of volume 94 (2010) is presented in this issue.
