Title: Darkening Dusk

Author: Meimie42

Chapter: 1

Rating: T

Genre: Drama/General

Characters: Bella, Edward, Mike, Jessica, the usual

Word Count: 2450

Summary: After Bella’s mom is murdered, she moved in with her father in Fork, WA. The last thing she’s looking for is friends, but friends seem to find her anyway.

Author’s note: I guess you could call this a retelling of Twilight. Bella is a little more socially withdrawn because of what happened to her mother. Everything else is cannon. Please note, this story takes place a couple months before Bella WOULD have moved to Forks.

The house looked exactly the same as Bella remembered it. Same muted colors, same waterlogged roof. Everything was the same—at least on the surface. Inside was another story.

“I’ll grab your bag, Bells,” Charlie called as he moved to the back of the police cruiser. It was the first thing he’d said since he’d picked her up at the airport. He had a hard enough talking to his teenage daughter under normal circumstances, trying to strike up some kind of meaningful conversation with her two weeks after her mother had died was practically impossible.

“Room’s pretty much the same,” he said, moving past her with all of her life’s possessions in his hands. It wasn’t much. Two suit cases, one filled with clothes and the other filled with Renee’s things she hadn’t been able to leave behind. Pathetic.

Bella followed her dad into the small house. Everything was oddly familiar and yet strangely different and new. She used to spend a month here every summer when she was younger. It had been so long, she’d forgotten what had been here.

“I uh, didn’t have much time to clean up before you came. Things happened so fast.”

Bella nodded. She wouldn’t have necessarily described it as fast though. More mind numbingly still. Over the last couple weeks it had been hard to separate out the days. It was like she was living in one continuous nightmare that she just couldn’t wake up from.

Charlie led her upstairs and into her room where he set her things next to her bed and gave her a sad smile. He was trying his best and she knew that. She returned the expression, hoping it would alleviate the worry he was carrying. She couldn’t tell if it worked.

“Got you enrolled in school, Bells. I didn’t give them a start date though, wasn’t sure when you’d feel up to going back.”

School. She’d been dreading going back since Charlie had bought her plane ticket out here. Not that she had anything against school necessarily, but Forks, Washington was a small town, and in small towns, news traveled. It wouldn’t be long before the story of Isabella Swan and her murdered mother made its way through the campus like a wildfire.

Delaying the inevitable wouldn’t help though. It’d only create more mystery and intrigue. Better to just get it over with. Let them gawk and be done with it. “Tomorrow’s fine.”

“You sure, Bells?”

“Yeah, I’m sure.” She made another attempt at a smile and whether it worked or not, Charlie slowly bowed out of the room, giving her some time to herself. Bella sat down on her bed, the springs creaking under her weight just like always.

“Welcome home,” she whispered to herself.

The police cruiser dropped her just outside the administration office of Forks High School. Bella closed the door behind her and gave a quick wave, watching her father gratefully drive off. He’d been walking on eggshells since the moment her plane landed; he looked relieved to be going to work like things were normal.

Bella spared a glance at the line of cars forming to get into the parking lot and smiled. Probably the work of Charlie’s cruiser. Nothing slowed traffic down like a cop car, especially in this town. It’d taken nearly twice as long to get there as it would any normal person and that created an embarrassing backlog of traffic. Bella had said as much and Charlie promised he’d see if he couldn’t get her a car so he didn’t have to drive her every morning. It was probably a peace offering, hoping to make her transition to Forks as smooth as possible. She’d take it.

Slinging her bag over her shoulder, Bella started towards the office. Charlie had pointed her in the right direction, the rest of the school she was just going to have to figure out on her own.

It was raining outside. Bella spared a glance at the cloud covered sky; such a rarity in Phoenix. She was so used to the sun, the heat. Renee always loved the summer…maybe Forks had some redeeming qualities. Bella wasn’t sure she could take any more sun for a while. It would remind her too much of the things she loved. Carefully Bella ducked out of the rain and into the administration’s office to pick up her schedule.

Her face hurt from the forced smiling, but there was nothing for it. The adults all stared at her with mixtures of pity and fear. Smiling was about the only thing that seemed to make them calm down. In this place, the kid gloves were definitely on. It was something that, up until these last couple of weeks, she hadn’t really been used to. She’d always been her mom’s ‘middle aged child’. The adult in the family. Here she was that poor girl.

No one mentioned Renee, or the police investigation that had been on the cover page of one newsless afternoon. They didn’t have to say anything to her though; she could see it in their eyes. They’d followed the news stories; they’d probably even talked about her in the teacher’s lounge. She was news.

Phoenix had been so big, so sink or swim. You weren’t coddled. Who had time to coddle with four thousand students at a single high school? Forks’ entire population could have fit inside. Here everything was so personal. Everyone knew everyone’s business. There was no such thing as anonymity and Bella was beginning to think she’d overestimated how ready she was for this day to finally be here. She was glad when the red head behind the counter finally gave her a map and schedule and sent her on her way.

Bella stared down at her class list in her right hand, and the school map in her left as she started in the direction she was pretty sure English was. For such a small school it seemed impossibly confusing to find anything. She hadn’t gone very far before she was certain she was going the wrong way. Turning, she headed back the way she came, confusion furrowing her brow as she tried to decipher the hieroglyphics on the legend. It didn’t make sense. She turned the map upside down; maybe she was looking at it from the wrong angle. That didn’t help matters any.

“Damn it,” she whispered, arms dropping at her sides in defeat as she looked up to try to figure it out without the confusing map as a guide. The only thing in her sight though was a door swinging right in her direction. Her hands flew up protectively to cover her face but she didn’t have enough time to move out of the way before the solid wood door smashed right into her, knocking her to the ground.

“Perfect,” she breathed out, squeezing her eyes shut to shove away the pain her ass was feeling since meeting the linoleum.

“Are you okay?” a frantic voice asked.

Bella opened her eyes and turned, surprised to see an eager, baby faced boy offering a hand to help her up. She took the offered help, if only because she didn’t fully trust her own footing. Clumsy was her middle name after all.

“I’m so sorry,” the boy continued.

“Don’t worry about it,” Bella shook her head, gently pulling her hand out of his grip after she was sure she had secure footing. “I wasn’t watching where I was going.” She forced a smile to prove she was fine, he seemed convinced.

“You’re Isabella right? Isabella Swan?”

“Just Bella actually,” she corrected instinctively, though wondered for a brief moment if a new school wasn’t time for a new start. Bella had been her mother’s nickname for her after all. She better of it though almost instantly. Bella had lost enough of Renee this month, she’d hold onto Bella.

Plus Isabella never really fit anyway.

“That’s a nice name,” the boy replied with a goofy grin. “I’m Mike.”

“Nice to meet you, Mike.”

There was an awkward moment of silence and Bella was at a loss for what to do about it. Socializing had never been her strength and the way Mike was looking at her was a little unnerving. It wasn’t that it wasn’t friendly; it was almost too friendly. She didn’t like it, but he seemed harmless enough.

“Sorry,” he shook his head as if shaking some unwanted thought. “Do you need help finding your class?”

“Um…yeah, actually, that would be great.” She forced a smile again. At least she wouldn’t be wandering the halls aimlessly.

He took her schedule from her, quickly analyzing it and smiling to himself. “We’ve got a couple classes together. I’ll walk you.” He motioned down the hallway, back the way she had been coming.

Bella hesitated for a moment, unsure why, before finally nodding and following his lead. He started talking, rubbing his hand over his perfectly gelled spikes nervously. He was rambling mostly, going on about the school’s history and some basketball championship three years ago. She tried to pay attention but it was hard. The closer she got to the classroom, the more anxious about this day she became. She wasn’t sure how many more forced smiles she had left in her.

“So, sorry about your mom—I heard what happened.”

Bella stopped in her tracks, her breath hitching uncomfortably in her throat. She felt something cold and hard brush by her but she ignored it, her entire thoughts focused on the last sentence that had just come out of Mike’s mouth.

He seemed to know he had said the wrong thing and looked desperate to try and fix it. “I didn’t mean that, I mean I am sorry…”

“No, its okay,” she breathed out, walling up the flood of emotions that wanted to erupt at him. It wasn’t his fault. When people die, normal people express their condolences and normally the grieving accept it. But she didn’t even know this boy and he didn’t know her. And he especially didn’t know her mother. It was one thing to know they all knew, but another thing to hear it come out of their mouths like they had any idea what the last few weeks had been like for her.

“Really, Bella, I’m sorry—”

“Its fine,” she cut him off. “Still fresh is all.”

He looked like he wanted to kick himself, but Bella was already too far off in her own world to really care. She spotted building three and started for it, Mike scurried after her. She could feel the anxiety budding in her chest as she approached, but she soldiered on, if for no other reason than there was a good chance she’d have a good excuse not to talk to anyone for fifty minutes.

“If you need help finding your next class…” Mike let his voice trail off and Bella nodded quickly, ducking inside the classroom and going towards the teacher. She got him to sign her office slip and found an empty seat near the back.

There were too many names to remember. Jessica and Angel…or Angela maybe. And Eric and Tyler and Lauren and…and it was too much. One day and already a headache was forming behind her right eye. It felt like the whole school wanted a piece of her and she just didn’t have it in her to give.

Bella weaved through the hallway traffic, making her way silently towards the cafeteria. She was thankful for the break; she couldn’t wait to just have a few minutes to herself. She’d even turned Jessica down on an offer to sit at her table. That had seemed to upset her delicate sensibilities, but Bella didn’t care. All she could think about was finding a quiet moment away from all the new pseudo-friends and their expectations.

It wasn’t that Bella didn’t like people, or didn’t want friends, she just wasn’t ready for so much so soon. She’d never been the social butterfly Renee had been, too much of Charlie in her she guessed. But it was more than that. In such a short amount of time Bella had lost the single most important person in her life. Her mother, her best friend, her confidant; she wasn’t sure she was ready to start bonding with other human being just yet. The wounds were still too fresh. For the moment, she just needed some time away from all the excitement that was surrounding her.

The cafeteria was abuzz with people. A dull roar stirred as she entered and she could feel eyes following hers. Her name was on the lips of more than a few people. It was unnerving. She wished they would stop and find something new to talk about; anything but her and her tragedy.

Bella was careful to ignore the table she saw Mike and Angela at. If she didn’t see them she could at least plead ignorance later and maybe not completely destroy any chance of friendships before she was even ready to try. She spotted a small empty table across the room and moved towards it. The next thirty minutes would be hers she hoped. She had no plan for what she might do should one of her new friends try and sit with her. Bella guessed she’d cross that bridge when she came to it.

As she walked towards the table, through the throngs of people, something caught her attention. It was the table next to her empty one she had scoped out. Sitting away from the rest of the school were five rather different looking students. They looked almost too old to be in high school and…they were stunning—absolutely beautiful, and yet somehow…off. It was hard to look away. She managed to pull her stare in long enough to walk past their table and for some unknown reason felt the hackles on her neck rise as she did.

Bella took her seat in the empty chair and spared a quick glance over her shoulder at the five strange students. She was surprised one of them was staring back. A boy, gorgeous and with the blackest eyes she’d ever seen. His gaze was practically burning holes in her skin with such intensity and deep-seated hatred. She wanted to pull her own eyes away but felt completely entranced by his glare.

Suddenly he was on his feet. It was a sharp, quick gesture, before he was moving fluidly out of the cafeteria, five sets of eyes following him out. Had she done something to upset him? Bella couldn’t see how, she’d just sat down. Maybe this table was off limits somehow? She turned and looked at the table with the four remaining students sitting at it. They weren’t looking at her though; instead three of them were looking at the forth, a little dark haired girl. They looked confused, she look horrified.

Bella tried not to think about what had happened at lunch, but she couldn’t stop herself. She kept replayed the visceral reaction of the auburn haired boy in her head over and over again. His eyes had been so intense, so hate filled and for the life of her she couldn’t figure out why. What had she done?

The lunch bell rang and Bella rose to dump her uneaten lunch in the trashcan. Footsteps approached and she turned to see the boy, Mike, running to catch up with her. “Missed you at lunch,” he said, trying to be nonchalant about it. He was failing completely. Guilt swept her.

“Yeah sorry…just needed some time,” Bella answered, abandoning her decision to play dumb about skipping past Mike’s table. “Some other time?”

“Yeah, some other time,” he agreed with a small frown. He seemed to sense her non-committal tone. “You have Biology next right?”

Bella frowned for a moment and reached into her pocket to pull out her schedule. She was surprised to see that Biology was in fact her next class. It was a little unnerving that Mike knew her schedule better than she did. “Yeah, Biology.”

“If my partner isn’t here today, you can sit with me,” he offered. “It might even be not too late in the semester to change partners…I mean…if you wanted to be my partner.”

Bella stopped walking, not sure how to take what he was saying. It had thrown her off guard somewhat. “Um, that’s nice of you Mike, really, but I don’t want to rock the boat, ya know?” And the truth was she didn’t, but there was more to it than that. She wasn’t ready for this sort of closeness. Whether it was friendship, or something more Mike was looking for, it would take some time before she could truly give it without all the fake smiles and awkwardness. Renee’s death had affected every part of her life and all those wounds were still raw.

“Yeah, no, I understand. New school and all. If you change your mind though…” he left it hanging in the air and she knew he was talking about more than just the lab partner thing.

“Thanks Mike,” she nodded and started walking again. He fell in step beside her, talki...
